{"id":10199,"date":"2016-01-28T08:00:56","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T13:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/?p=10199"},"modified":"2022-08-23T10:54:36","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T14:54:36","slug":"cruising-the-inside-passage-of-alaska-on-the-disney-wonder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/cruising-the-inside-passage-of-alaska-on-the-disney-wonder\/","title":{"rendered":"Cruising the Inside Passage of Alaska on the Disney Wonder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the neatest experiences of my life was sailing the inner passage of Alaska on the Disney Wonder this past summer. \u00a0Even though it is a\u00a0sea day, the ship passes through the fjords at Tracy Arm in the Inside Passage on the way to view the Sawyer Glacier in the Tongass National Forest.\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost like a Port Adventure without having to disembark the ship!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10208\" title=\"Alaska - snow mountains\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-snow-mountains-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Alaska - snow mountains\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-snow-mountains.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-snow-mountains-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We began our sightseeing at the very front of the ship where we saw whales, seals and even orcas which was incredible. \u00a0It was a very brisk and blustery day with a high of only 52 degrees!\u00a0 The ship\u2019s staff were serving coffee, hot cocoa and hot milled wine in souvenir mugs as well as hot soup in bread bowls on deck. \u00a0Disney characters were also roaming the deck for photo opps!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10203\" title=\"Alaksa - orca\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaksa-orca-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Alaksa - orca\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaksa-orca.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaksa-orca-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cruise staff also passed out blankets to keep everyone warm \u2013 even in jackets and jeans we needed them.\u00a0 The ship also served a barbeque buffet for lunch on the back deck with some traditional Alaskan items (including venison sausage) and a more traditional buffet at Beach Blanket.\u00a0 Our head server from our dining rotation had strongly encouraged us to indulge in the barbeque, so we indulged and had some amazing views as we ate lunch outside.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10205\" title=\"Alaska - cold kids\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-cold-kids-413x550.jpg\" alt=\"Alaska - cold kids\" width=\"413\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-cold-kids-413x550.jpg 413w, https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-cold-kids-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-cold-kids.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we entered the passage to the glacier, a local naturalist narrated over the ship\u2019s loudspeakers to educate the ship\u2019s passengers of the history of the Inside Passage, what we were seeing and just how the fjords were formed (the U-shaped valleys, for instance, were formed by passing glaciers). The surrounding mountains are just at 7,000 feet tall with melting snowcaps forming amazing waterfalls.\u00a0 This was one of the most interesting days I\u2019ve ever had on Disney Cruise Line and certainly the views were among the best I\u2019ve ever seen (comparable to the views in Peru from my Adventures by Disney trip).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10207\" title=\"Alaska - ship bow\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ship-bow-413x550.jpg\" alt=\"Alaska - ship bow\" width=\"413\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ship-bow-413x550.jpg 413w, https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ship-bow-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ship-bow.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we sailed further into the passage, we encountered an iceberg field and the ship moved extremely slow and used the thrusters to move the ice out of the way so that we could\u00a0 get to the Sawyer Glacier (there are actually two glaciers &#8211; the north and south, the latter of two is the one ships can access)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10212\" title=\"Alaska - iceburg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-iceburg-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Alaska - iceburg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-iceburg.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-iceburg-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-thumb float-left margin-right-20\">\n<div class=\"image_title\">The views were incredible and once we arrived at the glacier it was an amazing sight.\u00a0 It felt like we were all over the ship trying to get that perfect view \u2013 but it was perfect from wherever we stood.\u00a0 Sediment from the glacier causes the water to be a striking color of blue.\u00a0 Truly amazing and the captain was able to position the ship incredibly close (he later joked that Disney magic gets the Disney Wonder closer than any other cruise ship to the glacier than other cruise lines \u2013 I think I believe it!).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image_title\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"image_title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10213\" title=\"Alaska - sawyer srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-sawyer-glacier.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.themagicforless.com\/tmflblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-sawyer-glacier-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"image_title\"><\/div>\n<p>We were on Deck 4 when the crew hauled up one of the icebergs which we were able to touch.\u00a0 It pretty much felt like a big block of ice, but judging by the crowds of passengers trying to get a feel it was actually pretty cool (pun intended).<\/p>\n<p>The captain rotated the ship from port to starboard (think windshield wiper movement) for maybe an hour and we came back down to our staterooms to enjoy the views from our verandah (and where we had no crowds and it was a bit warmer!).\u00a0 We were able to see dozens (maybe hundreds) of seals laying on the icebergs and swimming around them in the ice field.\u00a0 Once even came up right below our verandah as if to beg for food.\u00a0 It was so cool, but I had to wonder why he wasn\u2019t scared of this massive ship!<\/p>\n<p>The captain made a 360 degree spin as the final time for viewing and it was time to sail back through the fjords \u2013 the only way in is the same way out so we were afforded amazing scenery on the journey out of the Inside Passage which we enjoyed from our stateroom &#8211; an exciting day of adventure and we never had to leave the ship!<\/p>\n<p><img
